Garfield Park C40

Winner of C40 Cities global “Reinventing Cities” Competition.

About this Project

Nia collaborated with Perkins + Will on Garfield Green on a 1.5-acre vacant site at the corners of Kedzie and Fifth avenues on Chicago’s West Side. The $22.3 million project includes a combination of affordable, market rate, and cooperative housing units. Additionally, the project includes 20,000 square feet of public space and a 12,000-square-foot public plaza.

Sustainability and community improvement are the top priorities for the project. Solar panels supply 100% of the projects energy needs, and a green roof will help manage stormwater runoff. Additionally, the green roof will double as an urban farm. Modular construction be used to maximize affordability, and the modular units will be manufactured in the nearby Little Village Neighborhood. Furthermore, the proposal includes a plan for a clinic to address neighborhood health issues.
