Little Italy Branch Library + Apartments

Mixed-use project between Chicago Housing Authority and Chicago Public Library in the West Side’s Little Italy neighborhood.

About this Project

Nia collaborated with SOM on the Little Italy Library & Taylor Street Apartments. It was one of the first instances of the City of Chicago’s first instances of creating mixed-use facilities to house multiple different public supported programs.

The multi-story mixed-income residential complex sits atop the one-story Little Italy Branch Library and additional community spaces. The new facility created a new community social node.

The original aim of the development was to provide a catalyst to the surrounding area during The Great Depression. Respecting its historical attributes, Nia Architects was contracted to modernize the interiors and to meet current codes and standards. Additionally, two of the buildings were made handicap accessible.

Other modernizations include an updated laundry room, fitness room, community center, and redesigned central court-yard. The new courtyard has two playgrounds, new landscaping, as well as a turf field for recreational use.
